Cleaning Tips for Allergies

Taking a few extra steps in how you clean and how you prepare your home may help reduce the effects of allergies brought on by dust mites, grass pollen, bacteria, mold, mildew or your pets. Slowly these contaminants build up causing a higher concentration of allergens in the air which could have a negative affect on your health.

One of the simplest and most effective ways of combating these contaminants is having a regular cleaning schedule that you stick to. The first place you may want to start is by vacuuming the carpet and or mopping the hard floor surfaces weekly. It takes a bit of extra time but move your furniture aside and get underneath as much as possible. Areas that seem to collect a lot of debris are located under you bed, sofa and chairs.  Look for a vacuum cleaner that uses a certified HEPA filter.

Draperies should also be cleaned on a consistent basis.  Many vacuum cleaners come with specific attachments for just such a job, or you can purchase machine washable drapes. Using slip covers on your furniture will allow you too quickly remove them and throw them in the washer. Also changing the filter in your air conditioner or furnace on a regular schedule will help keep the air that circulates through your home clean.
